Grooming Your Horse

You need to groom your horse every day. You may think the reason to groom your horse is so he/she looks nice, but the main reason to groom your horse is so that he will stay healthy and clean. If you keep your horse in a stable where he can not roll on the ground to groom himself, you should groom him daily. If he is out in the pasture he will not need as much grooming.
Here is a list of thing you need to groom your horse and how they are used.
The Dandy Brush This is used for brushing off mud that your horse might get on its coat. It has stiff bristles.
Stiff Brush The stiff brush is for brushing hooves only.
Body Brush This brush is softer than the dandy brush and is easier to hold. It is used to take off oil and dirt.
Rubber Curry This is also used for combing off mud and shedding hair.
Metal Curry The metal curry is used for cleaning the body of your horse only. (Never ever use this on your pony.)
Mane Comb this should be used for the mane and tail only.
Sponges There are three different uses for the sponge. You should keep a separate sponge for each.

lips and nostrils
dock or their rear    
Stable Cloth The stable cloth is used for drying off your horse's and making it look shiny and pretty.
Hoof Pick A hoof pick is used to clean dirt, pebbles and mud from the horse's hoof.
Hoof Oil This is used to put a sealing, protecting and shiny seal to the hoof.
Sweat Scraper This is just like a squeegee, except it is used on a horse not a window.

Here are some grooming tips

Make sure your horse is tied up in a warm and sheltered spot.

Take off you horse's tack and blankets before you start grooming.

Make sure that you're not around any mud puddles.

Check the equipment that you'll need to make sure everything is handy, clean, and ready to use before you begin.

Follow the natural curves of the horse's coat while you are brushing. If you don't, your horse will get mad.

Don't use any body brush on your horse's head.

Scrape the body brush with the curry comb to get the oil off.

After riding your horse, its skin it warmer. Grooming a horse with warm skin is easier because the pours are still open.

After sponging your horse's eyes, Change the water before sponging the nose and lips.

While you are grooming the tail make sure you are not standing directly behind your horse. Make sure your horse knows you are there before you start combing.


Clean your brushes after each use.

Interesting horse facts

Camargue horses are completely white as adults. Their babies are pure black when they are born.


Their is a breed of horse from Russia called Akhal-Teke. it can go for days without food or water.



You measure a horse height in hands. Each hand equals four inches. If you say a horse is 16.2 hands high, the 2 stands for 2 fingers. 


You can tell how old a horse is by how many teeth it has. A horse gets all of its teeth by the time it is 5 years old. After that, they just get longer. 


A female horse is called a mare. In the wild it is the mare that decides when the herd moves to another spot to find food.


A male horse is called a stallion. Usually only one stallion will stay with the herd.


Any marking on a horse's forehead is called a star, even if it is not shaped like a star. 


Horses and ponies feel safer when they are in a herd.


Mustangs are one of few breeds of horses that live wild in North America. They are related to the horses that the Spanish explores  brought to North America 400 years ago.


Horses can communicate how they are feeling by their facial expressions. They use their ears, nostrils, and eyes to show their mood. Beware of a horse that has flared nostrils and their ears back. That means it might attack.


A hoof is like a fingernail. It is always growing and needs to be clipped so that it won't be uncomfortable for the horse.


A farrier is a person who makes horse shoes and fits them on your horse. They also clip hooves to keep them from getting overgrown.


A horse can move in four ways: walk, trot, canter, gallop. A gallop is the fastest gait.

Knabstrup Horses

A quality riding horse, the Knabstrup is intelligent, perceptive, tractable, and easy to handle. The Knabstrup is used for general riding and showing in breed classes. Because of its spotted coat, it is in demand for circus work. There is nothing Oriental or refined in the Knabstrup, but today's horse remains solid and dependable;
a comfortable ride. A wide variety of different spots and splashes on a white or roan background. Some, however, still show the all over spotting of the old Knabstrup. The mane and tail are sparse. Knabstrup Formerly a victim of breeding almost entirely for eye catching color and markings, the Knabstrup is now bred more judiciously and makes good middle weight riding horse. Due to its coloring, it is still in demand for circus work. Horses stand from 15.2 to 15.4 hands high.

Schleswig Heavy Draft Horses

The Schleswig looks like a cross between a heavy horse and a large cob. It has a lively temperament and energetic movement, and is a willing, hard worker. The Schleswig is mainly used as a heavy draft horse on farms in Germany. Initially a rather ponderous heavy breed, the Schleswig Heavy Draft has been lightened and bred for more activity and now has a definite cob like appearance. It has an interesting history and retains its popularity as a farm horse in Europe. Schleswig Heavy Draft Horses stand about 15 to 16 hands high.

Ukrainian Riding Horses

The Ukrainian Riding Horse is a mixture of excellent riding and competition breeds, most of which are bred for good temperament. The Ukrainian Riding Horse has picked up its trait, being kind natured, obliging, and a willing worker. It is a quality warmblood horse with strength, stamina, and scope. Principally a high class competition horse, the Ukrainian Riding Horse is used for general pleasure riding, light harness work such as
carriage driving, and also in agriculture, depending on individual type and build. Ukrainian Riding Horses stand about 16 hands high.

Australian Stock Horse

The Australian Stock Horse has good temperament, courage, toughness, and stamina. The Australian Stock Horse is used for stock work, rodeos, and for general riding. It is also often used as a high quality competition horse. The Australian Stock Horse shows much Quarter Horse character but with obvious Thoroughbred influence. The breed has had a fairly checked history in its short lifetime, but is now established and popular in many spheres, being used for general riding, stock work, rodeos, and as a competition horse. Australian Stock Horses stand about 15 to 16 hands high.

More information about horses

A hand is 4in (10cm), the approximate width of a man's hand. Horses and ponies are measured from the highest  point of the withers down to the ground in a perpendicular line. Measuring sticks are calibrated in hands and inches. The animal is stood on level ground with both forelegs together and the stick placed next to its shoulder with the arm touching the top of its wither. The measurement is read in hands and inches, for example, 15.2hh (hands high) means 15 hands and 2 inches. Horses are measured from the highest point of the withers. Exercise is extremely important for a horse's wellbeing . Horses are designed for life on the move. The natural lifestyle of a horse is almost constant walking, eating as it goes, and domestic horses should be allowed to mimic this as far as possible, even if they are stabled. Two hours exercise a day, mostly walking with some trotting and perhaps cantering, is the minimum required to keep most stabled horses healthy and happy. Horse communicate with each other, and with other animals and people, mainly by body language and facial expressions. They do, though, also use their voices. Anger, dislike, or threat toward a particular individual is shown be head outstretched, ears flat back, eyes angry, nostrils drawn back and wrinkled, and perhaps the teeth being bared ready to bite or warn. Interest is shown by ears pricked (pointed) toward the interesting object or person, the eyes alert, the head held high if the object is distant or more flexed inward if it is near, and nostrils open (flared)
and perhaps quivering if the horse is near enough to smell the object or person. Fear is shown by ears being directed toward whatever the horse is afraid of. The eyes will look wide and alarmed, the nostrils will be wide open, and the skin will appear tightly drawn across the face. A sign of submission in youngsters, is the head outstretched and held fairly low, with the front teeth being gently snapped repeatedly together. this is called mouthing. The attitude of flehmen is when a horse is closely examining an odor. it breathes in the smell, then raises its head and turns its upper lip up to hold the smell in its air passages where the sensory Jacobsen's organ analyzes the odor. Stallions herd their mares and offspring with a peculiar snaking motion. the head and neck are outstretched and held low as he goes along, usually at a trot, snaking his head and neck from side to side.

Albino

White horses have always been regarded by many as spectacular or glamorous, and American Albino also have the advantage of generally being bred for good conformation and temperament. White horses, rather like Palomino horses, have always been associated with glamour and show. In horses, the albino is really a type and not a breed, yet in the U.S. they are regarded as a breed, American Creams, the foundation stallion being Old King, foaled in 1906 and possibly of  Morgan /Arab blood. The breed association is favoring stock of Quarter Horse. Morgan, Thoroughbred, or Arab type and various color combinations of white and cream body coat or mane tail hair, pink or cinnamon colored skin, and blue or dark eyes.

French Anglo Arab

The best examples of the french Anglo Arab combine the Arab's intelligence, good nature, and stamina, and the scope, size, and speed of the Thoroughbred. They require sensitive knowledgeable handling. The French Anglo Arab is a high quality riding horse which excels at show jumping, dressage, eventing, racing on the flat and over jumps, endurance riding, showing, and hunting. French Angle Arab's stand about 15 to 16 hands high. The French Anglo Arab is one of the highest quality performance horses in the world.

Anglo Arab

The Anglo Arab is a combination of two of the most aristocratic breeds in the world the Arab and the Thoroughbred the term Anglo comes from the fact the Thoroughbred is an English breed. The Anglo Arab is a top quality riding horse with all the hallmarks of a hot blood. A combination of the Arab and the Thoroughbred, the Anglo Arab can take after either breed. This lovely horse is quite Thoroughbred in appearance. A spirited, intelligent, courageous, and affectionate nature is characteristics of the best Anglo Arab. They have plenty of personality and tend to be thinkers, unlike some Thoroughbreds. They should be cared for like any blood horse, requiring sensitivity and skill in handling plus plenty of exercise.
